What are the origins of the Baptist faith?

I am familiar with the long list of Christian faiths whose origin can be traced back to Catholicism, but I am not familiar with the origins of the Baptist faith. Are they a schism of a modern day religious group? What are the differences between the Baptist beliefs and other Protestant faiths? What is the difference between a born again Baptist, a southern Baptist, and a regular Baptist?
